Description

Has everyone heard of this (bloody) fairytale? A very similar-but-not-quite-the-same story is Count Silvernose. Both of these malevolent men had forbidden rooms in which they hid their previous wives (in Bluebeard's case, dead) and they always gave their wife the key to this room. The bloodstain on Bluebeard's key showed that his wife entered the room. Bluebeard ended up being killed by his wife's brothers because he was going to kill his wife for entering the room. Count Silvernose was outsmarted by his ugly one-glass-eyed wife, who rescued her two foolish, pretty sisters (Silvernose's ex-wives) from the fiery brimstone pit somehow located behind a small door. She had washed the brimstone smell from her hair after opening the door, because that was the indicator; Count Silvernose always smelled his wives' hair after he came back from wherever. He threw them into the pit if their hair smelled like brimstone. The glass-eyed wife, however, always did laundry. For this reason, she could explain away the wet hair. Also, she could send her two sisters back in a basket of laundry, placing her glass eye on top so that when the Count stopped to see why the basket is so heavy, the sisters inside would say, "I'm watching you!" and the Count would hurry on. I'm not sure how, but in the end, the Count dies by way of brimstone pit. I think.
